Wellness on the Go: Taking Flight Part 2: Eating Right

It’s easy to look at travel days as “cheat days” and a chance to overindulge (we’re guilty of this too). We all know how hard it can be to get back on the wagon after falling off, so to prevent this from happening, we want to make sure you’re equipped with tips on how to stay on track. Flying can leave you feeling bloated and dehydrated so we believe it's especially important to not stray right from the start of your trip… your flight.

Let's talk eating right for flight!

In general, we would suggest:
 

Low sodium, small meals without overdoing it
 

Eating about 45-60 minutes before your flight
 

Foods to Eat Day of Flying

Oranges: vitamin C boost, easy to carry on and extra hydration
 

Herbal teas (but don’t use airplane hot water read our previous blog to find out why): extra vitamins, minerals and hydration
 

Greek yogurt (sugar free): probiotics to aid in any digestive issues and protein to keep you remaining full
 

Lean protein in general (chicken, turkey, fish): to keep you satisfied unit landing
 

Smoothies (with fruits and plain Greek yogurt): protein and hydrating
 

Bananas, Raisins or Sunflower Seeds: easy to travel with, high in potassium to reduce leg cramping in a tight space
 

Cherries: can help you adjust to a new time zone according to The New York Times (Super interesting!)

Oats: keep you full from the fiber and carbs and aid in sleep due to the aforementioned melatonin and tryptophan

Foods to Avoid While Flying

Sulfur rich foods like eggs, protein powders and meats
 

Nuts, including most granola bars

Dried fruits, including some granola bars

Sugar free gums and mints
 

Hummus and beans in general

Chips and anything with high sodium

Anything fried!
